CHAPTER 4

The Encroaching Enemy

A s they walked under the canopy of trees, Ina recalled the dust on her father’s bookcase as well as on their backyard fence.

Yaya Maya nodded and said, “Let’s begin there.”

The fence looked as if all the moisture had been sucked out of it. It had turned grayer and more brittle, and had a lot more holes the size of coins.

“They work fast,” Yaya Maya said, and led Ina through the bamboo grove. Ina was surprised to see gray spots appearing on the bamboo shoots as well.

“There’s dust on the ground everywhere!” Ina said. She followed Yaya Maya between the clumps of bamboo.

Suddenly, Yaya Maya threw up her hands, and the afternoon sun began to shine brighter through the trees. Her brown dress grew longer and became a silvery white. Her braid came undone, and her black hair tumbled to the ground.

Ina screamed, but Yaya Maya looked at her imploringly. “There’s no time,” she said. “They’re coming.”

She pointed to a path, which they followed down to a clearing marked by dying trees that leaned away from it. Their roots showed, as if they were in a hurry to get out of there, if only they could. A little mound of earth began to rise, covered in a blanket of dust. As it grew larger, caves appeared, and out of these crawled gigantic, black-headed creatures with pincers and six hairy legs growing out the sides of their white-armored bodies.

Yaya Maya didn’t move, and Ina found herself pressing close to her.
